  • National Social Security Fund (NSSF) of the Kingdom of Cambodia, as Chairman of the ASEAN Social Security Association (ASSA), held the Webinar on “The Protection of Migrant Workers in South East Asia” with the Participation of 22 Representatives of the ASSA Member Institutions

    Phnom Penh—After hosting the 37th ASSA Board Meeting on “Expanding Social Security Coverage” on 9 December 2020, NSSF held an important webinar on “The Protection of Migrant Workers in South East Asia” on the afternoon of 14 October 2021 with the participation of 22 representatives of the ASSA member institutions.

    H.E. HENG Sophannarith, ASSA Chairman and Acting Director General of NSSF representing H.E. OUK Somvithya, Delegate of the Royal Government in charge as Director General of NSSF, presided over in the webinar and said that this significant workshop was organized with the aim of (1) sharing good practices, knowledge, and experiences with each other, as well as raising issues related to migrant workers and (2) identify key areas and take important measures for immediate and long-term improvement of the protection and promotion of the rights of migrant workers.

    AS the ASSA Chairman, he strongly hopes that this workshop will share knowledge, information, good practices, and experiences mutually among the ASSA member institutions for the protection and promotion of rights and benefits of migrant workers. In addition, the ASSA member institutions and other stakeholders will be able to identify the key arears, measures, and collaborations for improvements related to the protection of the rights and well-being of migrant workers during the spread of COVID-19 pandemic impacting on livelihood of humankind around the world.

    It’s certified that the ASEAN Social Security Association (ASSA) was established on 13 February 1998 as a joint initiative of five countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. Currently, in all ASEAN countries, there are 22 social security institutions became members of ASSA including NSSF of the Kingdom of Cambodia on 24 March 2011 on the occasion of the 27th ASSA Board Meeting held in Singapore.

    With respect to the Memorandum of Agreement signed by the ASSA member institutions to implement the social security system that developed and delivered in line with international standards, national regulatory framework and context for providing benefits to workers, it’s stated that the ASSA member has a rotating role to host the event each year following by the alphabetical letter country.

    Just a gentle remind that on 9 December 2020, NSSF hosted the virtual 37th ASSA Board Meeting under the theme of “Extending Social Security Coverage” with the satisfied and fruitful results and proposed the above important workshop.
